Good, but perhaps too simple? I tin encounter why some people don't like this book, although it's 1 of the clearest mathematical textbook I take ever seen in my limited feel. Because information technology'southward too articulate and easy to sympathise, it may seem even lilliputian peculiarly to those who like mathematics for its complexity and sophistication (whether real or not). Information technology is a pretty well-known psychological miracle, even so: you tend to perceive something to be of loftier quality if you lot accept a harder time understan Good, just perhaps also simple? I can encounter why some people don't like this volume, although it's one of the clearest mathematical textbook I accept always seen in my limited experience. Because information technology's too clear and easy to understand, it may seem fifty-fifty trivial specially to those who like mathematics for its complexity and sophistication (whether real or non). Anyway, though the exercises were a little too piece of cake, this textbook is definitely a GREAT fashion to kickoff studying statistics, as it requires only the knowledge of some high school algebra and explains everything then well that you really don't need to spend hours trying to decipher what's going on in a proof or an equation.

Will exist reading Freedman'southward more advanced textbook, Statistical Models next, supplemented maybe with some standard college textbook on mathematical statistics, like Wasserman's All of Statistics.

The authors write in an accessibly style and use lots of simple examples to lay down the foundations of the most important statistical theories and tools. Descriptive statistics, inferences, frequency theory of take a chance, using models, and tests of signicifance similar the chi foursquare test (for testing frequencies) and t-tests (both between-grouping and within-group analysis).

Information technology would take been nice to read some more about the historical context of these ideas and their development over time. Too, it would accept been nice to read some more virtually the philosophical problems surrounding statistics every bit tool for reliable knowledge. The authors mention that in modernistic science, especially the alfa sciences, statistics is over-used and in many cases merely used equally weighty linguistic communication to proffer up results.

I can attest to this concluding point - any analysis based on models is simply based on the assumptions of the model itself. Trash in = trash out. Modern sciences similar psychology like to nowadays their results as pregnant, but they're actually only presenting their own assumptions in weighty language. (Information technology is common knowledge that replicability, for example, is a huge issue in psychology and that sociological research is heavily influenced past political-ideological assumptions). Would have been nice to read some famous example studies...

Anyway, the volume is decent - I can't really recommend it besides digging upwards quondam knowledge. To learn statistics ane needs some more guidance, preferably inside a course setting.

If you want to learn the ins and outs of statistics, this is the book for you. One wonders why exactly you would accept such a desire, just that might just exist too much data! This book is extremely well-written, and is designed for those (people like me) who don't have much in the fashion of advanced mathematical skills. Though I read this for a class I had to take, I actually enjoyed taking on some of the abstruse concepts presented here. Whatsoever statistics book will teach you lot how to calculate means, standard deviations and covariances. But this volume also teaches you the why behind the equations and when NOT to utilize the equations. That is, it teaches y'all how to sniff out bad experimental pattern and data sets that do not fit the standard (or normal) distribution.

During the fall of 1993, I was in my first semester of college. I took statistics and didn't like it at all. This was likely my own fault, as I was non a very serious student -- occasionally ditching class and frequently staying up much too late. During that fall semester in my statistics course, I wrote what seemed like a massive paper to an eighteen year old, at 21 pages long (but it included data). Since I was 16, I had a task at Montgomery Ward at Randhurst shopping mall, where I sold shoes -- perha During the autumn of 1993, I was in my first semester of college. I took statistics and didn't like it at all. This was likely my own fault, every bit I was not a very serious student -- occasionally ditching form and frequently staying up much too late. During that autumn semester in my statistics class, I wrote what seemed like a massive newspaper to an 18 year old, at 21 pages long (just it included data). Since I was 16, I had a job at Montgomery Ward at Randhurst shopping mall, where I sold shoes -- perhaps trying to fulfill my lifelong aspirations to be Al Bundy -- that task I kept until I was 21. For my newspaper, I kept record of customers at Montgomery Ward in the shoe department for an unabridged twenty-four hours and recorded the amount every single customer spent on items. I likewise had to record whether shoppers bought with cash or credit, and so conduct an independent samples t-test to compare whether there was a statistically pregnant difference in average amounts spent by the ii types of customers. Sure enough, there was a deviation, with credit card customers spending more on average than cash paying customers. While Pisani et al.'s text was useful enough to show me the equation to carry that t-exam, it wasn't a very helpful text. It didn't embrace any calculator utilize for statistics, and the issues seemed a scrap contrived. However, looking at the text book today, it seems logical and the presentation is fine -- though not particularly wonderful or inspiring. This text is fairly standard in many mathematics and statistics departments. Information technology'southward at present in a new edition, and the main change in the new edition is its data. I was drawn to this book by its promise of simple explanations and lack of complex mathematical formulas. Now, I think I should have gone for a niggling more than math-heavy book, every bit this one is mode also simplistic at times, and most of it volition already be familiar to anyone who had a semi-decent Probability Theory class. Finally ! book that will learn yous statistics in simple way !
I had a lot of statistics books and they all were too complicated.
It'southward like authors on purpose brand information technology hard to learn to go far less accessible
for normal people - and by normal I mean people without solid math background.

For me, the biggest feature of this book, are examples - they are very simple and they show yous,
stride by footstep, how everything is working. They are supported by dainty graphs and pictures, which helps a lot.
They guide you lot

for normal people - and by normal I hateful people without solid math background.

For me, the biggest characteristic of this book, are examples - they are very simple and they show you,
step by stride, how everything is working. They are supported by dainty graphs and pictures, which helps a lot.
They guide y'all through the process and in the end everything begins to clarify and became simple - sometimes even as well simple :)

Since I call back, I was always struggling with probability. In previous books that I read, it was never
explain in uncomplicated and piece of cake to empathise mode. But this book changed information technology ! Now I take basic understanding
and I can use simple probability techniques in real projects.
And yes, I wrote `simple and basic` considering this volume don't learn you advanced topics.
Information technology'southward now going very deep in each subject. If you would like to larn more advanced topics, yous must find another book.

In my opinion, this is perfect book to offset with.
If you lot don't accept good math and statistics cognition, only purchase this book and acquire.
I tin can recommend it in 100%.

I have tutored a few college students in statistics and this is the all-time textbook I have seen. (Including searching through alternative texts for them to use)
The sections are clear and brief with expert examples and and then practice questions with answer checks in the back so a educatee can learn and practise earlier moving on. One improvement I would have liked to meet is to have, at least some, longer explanations or piece of work shown for answers to help when a student doesn't even so grasp the concept.
This is I have tutored a few college students in statistics and this is the all-time textbook I take seen. (Including searching through culling texts for them to use)
The sections are clear and cursory with practiced examples and and then practice questions with reply checks in the back and then a student tin learn and practice earlier moving on. One improvement I would take liked to meet is to have, at least some, longer explanations or work shown for answers to help when a student doesn't all the same grasp the concept.
This is a textbook for course - I don't know that it'southward a bang-up text to self teach (although Kahn Academy is adept for that) ...more

This book is designed from very basic idea, with ample examples, to the very complex hypothesis. Author introduce these statistic ideas gradually with very skilful points of views, no tedious math jargons nor sophisticated formulas, the declaration is very clear. I high recommend this book to anyone who is devoted himself or herself on the statistics report. Good volume!

Piece of cake agreement - well written. 1 of the classics to become comfortable with statistics.

If y'all need a more than deep approach into one of the chapters y'all could reed a specific statistical book about the matters you lot are interested in.

Very informative. It'south not a typical stats book that tells models and equations, but gets behind the scene and reveals what stats really is, while eliminating all the unnecessary mathematical complications.

Good introductory volume just without in depth mathematical explanation.

Highly recommended to the uninitiated. Absence of maths makes information technology far more accessible to people across all disciplines. Great book.

I saw this on my brothers's old textbook shelf. I deal in statistics and then I wanted to brush up using a bones text. I was very pleasantly surprised past the content of this book. It teaches statistics in a way different than the usual manner by using lots of examples, both real and hypothetical. This book is awesome! I read information technology in conjunction with a statistics course offered on edX, and it was so understandable and readable. I highly recommend it. Although I read the 1978 edition, the content was still relevant equally long as I ignored the income levels, etc.

Recently finished this book in conjunction with an intro to statistics course. The book was like shooting fish in a barrel to follow and could, at times, take a sense of sense of humor. Though information technology did not delve into much theory it served the purpose of education beginners to the nuts of statistics.
